School Allotment – ‘Together We Grow’

The allotment develops…

We have begun developing our school allotment! The children have enjoyed digging over the ground, measuring out the distances and depth needed, reading the instructions, planting and watering. Already we have potatoes, strawberries, onions and artichoke growing! Children will be able to start using the school allotment in the autumn term. They will not only be tending to the plants, but also recycling waste from fruit snacks etc daily. Each child will gain the experience of food growing and caring for the produce they grow whilst learning how and where food comes from. They will be encouraged to work in small groups developing their team building and social skills. The children will also put their Maths, English and Science skills to good use by linking their learning in the classroom to the real life experiences in the allotment. All produce grown in the allotment will either be used in our school kitchen, cooking club or sold to parents via our termly school 'Farm Shop'.
