Year 2

Autumn Term:




Children will be developing their understanding of place value including the comparing and ordering of numbers. They will be finding 1/10 more or less than a two- digit number and be using this knowledge to add and subtract two digit numbers. They will be solving multiplication and division problems involving the 2x, 5x and 10x tables. They will also be finding ½ ¼ ¾ and ⅓ of shapes and numbers. Towards the end of the term they will also be identifying 2d and 3d shapes and their properties.

The children will be experiencing different writing genres and learning to use a range of sentence types (statements, exclamations, questions and commands) in their writing. They will be consolidating their use of full stops, capital letters and finger spaces and will start to use exclamation marks. They will also be learning to distinguish between nouns, adjectives and verbs. The children will be learning how to join their handwriting and how to spell the Yr2 common exception words (a copy is attached).

Topic-London Ablaze! (Autumn 1st Half Term)

Geography-The children will be studying maps of our school and drawing their own map of their route from home to school. They will also be learning how to use google maps to find landmarks in London. Design & Technology-They will be building landmarks of London from junk modelling. History- They will learn about the Fire of London. Science-They will be investigating different materials and their uses. Art-They will be completing watercolour paintings of London landmarks & a frieze of the Fire of London. R.E.-What did Jesus teach? Music-The children will be singing and playing percussion instruments on a regular basis in class. They will also be attending a performance at the Royal Festival Hall by the Philharmonic Orchestra in October and performing a Christmas play at the end of the term.

Topic-It’s a Colourful World! (Autumn 2nd Half Term)

History-They will be studying clothes through the ages. They will learn about Guy Fawkes and the traditions of Bonfire Night. Science-They will be investigating different materials and their uses. Design & Technology-They will be printing a skirt design using a story set in Nigeria as a stimulus.  Geography-The children will be studying maps and finding where Nigeria is located. They will also be comparing the landscape of Nigeria with Britain. Art-They will be learning how to weave using looms. R.E.- How do Christians Celebrate?

Music-The children will be singing and playing percussion instruments on a regular basis in class.


As we will be junk modelling in D&T any cardboard boxes, cereal boxes, yoghurt pots, tissue boxes, clear plastic containers, plastic ‘Kinder Egg’ shells will be gratefully received.

Reading Books

Children in Year 2 will need to bring in their book bags on a daily basis as they will be starting the Accelerated Reader (AR) scheme for reading. Each child will be given a reading level (zpd) based on their reading quiz. The children will then be able to bring home a book from this level. Please ensure the book’s code has LY not MY or UY written on the sticker inside. After a child has read their book they complete another quiz and choose a new book.

Children will record their reading book title and AR level in their reading record which they will keep in their book bag. After they have quizzed, the teacher or teaching assistant will write the percentage and sign the book. We encourage parents to read with their child every day for at least 10mins.

The children will start at the lower end of their zpd and work through the levels. If their zpd is 0.5-1.5, they will need to achieve 100% on three quizzes before they will be able to move on to the next level. However, if their zpd is between 1.5-5.0 they will need to achieve 100% on five quizzes before they will be able to move on to the next level. (They do not need to get 100% each time they quiz). In order to help your child do well with their quiz, ask them questions after each page as they are reading it to you.

We will also keep an eye on the amount of words your child has read and they will be rewarded with a book once they have read 500 words, 1,000 words and 2,000 words. They will also be rewarded by Mr Slade if they have read 15 books in one half term and kept an average percentage of 90%.


This will be a focus in Year 2 this year. Children will be learning spellings in class during the week for a spelling test on a Friday. Although the children will be learning the spellings in class, the list will be in the back of their reading records so you can practise the spellings with your child at home in preparation for the test on Friday. They will also be learning to read and spell the common exception words for Year 2


Spring Term


Our first topic is ‘Where is my home?’  This topic is all about where hot and cold places are in the world and the habitats that are created as a result. We will be finding out what animals live in these different habitats and how they have adapted to their environment.

In the second part of the Spring Term our topic is called ‘Staying Alive’. We will be learning what humans need to stay alive and the importance of eating healthy meals and doing lots of exercise. We will be learning about our 5 senses and locating different body parts. We will also be learning about Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole.


P.E. Days




2HM- Monday

Please ensure the children bring their P.E. kit each week. They can bring it in and leave it on their pegs for the half term if they wish to do so. Children with long hair will need a band to tie it up and no jewellery should be worn.









We encourage the children to read daily and change their books as often as possible. The children will continue to complete their AR quizzes in school after they have read each book.
