Year 4

Autumn Term

In Topic this term, Year 4 will be learning about the Ancient Egyptians. We will be learning about how they lived, the pyramids and famous pharaohs. In the second part of the term, they will be learning about Explorers and Adventurers, focusing on Shackleton’s expedition to the Antarctic.

In Literacy this term, Year 4 will be reading a range of texts including Jeff Brown’s Flat Stanley and the Great Egyptian Grave Robbery and Ice Trap – Shackleton’s Incredible Expedition.  We will be writing a variety of text types, including letters, diary entries, instructions, poetry and leaflets. We will be focusing on punctuation and handwriting, ensuring letter formation is correct. Your child will need to read their AR books for at least 25 minutes every day (sometimes aloud to you) and practise spellings.

In Maths this term, Year 4 will continue to learn place value, the four operations and explore word problems. We will develop mental maths strategies in class. The children will also apply this knowledge to real-life problems. Please ensure that your child regularly practises their times tables with a focus on 6x, 7x, 8x and 9x and how these facts link to division. Every child has a Mathletics username and login. These should be used regularly.

In Science this term, Year 4 will be investigating the digestive system. Later in the term, we will be learning about animals, living things and their habitats. The children will participate in various experiments where they will be asked to work collaboratively and use scientific vocabulary.
