Year 4

Autumn Term

In Topic this term, Year 4 will be learning about ‘Chocolate’. We are expecting to learn how chocolate was made and where it comes from. In the second part of the term, they will be learning about ‘Explorers and Adventurers’. We will be looking at different adventurers and their explorations.

In Literacy this term, Year 4 will be reading a range of texts including Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and short texts linked to topic work. We will be writing a variety of text types, including letters, diary entries, instructions, newspaper articles, poetry and leaflets. We will be focusing on punctuation and handwriting, ensuring letter formation is correct. Your child will need to read their AR books for at least 20 minutes every day (sometimes aloud to you) and practise spellings.

In Maths this term, Year 4 will continue to learn place value, the four operations and explore word problems. We will develop mental maths strategies in class. The children will also apply this knowledge to real-life problems. Please ensure that your child regularly practises their times tables with a focus on 6x, 7x and 9x and how these facts link to division. Every child has a Mathletics username and login. These should be used regularly.

In Science this term, Year 4 will be investigating State of Matter. Later in the term, we will be learning about animals, living things and their habitats. The children will participate in various experiments where they will be asked to work collaboratively and use scientific vocabulary.

Please ensure that your child has the PE kit with them on the following days:

  • 4A – Monday
  • 4J – Wednesday
  • 4S – Tuesday
  • 4G – Thursday
